On Friday, February 22, 2019, the association Nordisk Dans will hold a so-called 'city ball' in the beautiful Festival Hall of the Workers' Museum in the middle of Copenhagen. The association has had great success in attracting many people, especially young people, to dance events in Copenhagen, Odense and Aarhus in the past few years. We spoke with chairman Adam Laugesen about the idea behind Nordisk Dans, and how it all started. <\/strong>

\n\u201c"We were a group of young dancing and gaming enthusiasts who simply lacked a place where you could come out and dance folk dance, and express the culture in a truly living way where you kind of feel it in your body..," says Adam, and continues: "That's why we started the association 'Nordic Dance' here in Copenhagen.".
\n\u201cWe didn't have high expectations at first, we thought we could just get eight or sixteen people, and then some music to show up, then we could be two quadrilles, and then it could be insanely cool! But then it turned out to be a bigger success than we had expected. Over 80 people came to the first event two years ago, and since then we've had a steady attendance of those 60 to 120 people who have come and danced, and just had a lot of fun.\u201d
\n\u201cWe are trying to reach out and make folk dancing something attractive to come to!\u201d <\/strong>
\nIt's all different kinds of people: students and seasoned folk musicians \u2013 it's really been a mixed crowd. We don't know exactly who has come, but it's just crazy to see how much it has grown, and in addition to that it has also spread to Odense and Aarhus and we also have something coming up in Aalborg and Svendborg, and actually also in Helsinki, so it's really a concept that many have embraced, and it's something that is in demand.
\nThere are a lot of dance clubs around the country, but they typically have a slightly older audience, so it can be difficult for young people to get in there, because you want to dance with someone you can kind of look up to and where there's kind of the same energy. That's why I think this has been so successful.
\n\u201cPeople just need to discover it and open their eyes to how fun it is and how cool it is!\u201d<\/strong>
\nWe try to reach out and make folk dancing something that is attractive to come to. That is also why it is quite important to us that we do not hold these events in primary schools or in sports halls or in other typical club rooms, because we think it is important that there is an aesthetic around it, and we try to make it as complete as possible, so the music must be of high quality, it should preferably be young people who instruct and it should preferably be decorated \u2013 we have always decorated with pennants and fairy lights, and we serve cheap beers and it is also always free to come to, because it just has to be as easily accessible as possible, and people just have to discover it and open their eyes to how fun it is and how cool it is!

\nTHE BAR: is of course open and ready to serve coffee, star beer and water in the spirit of tradition. We look forward to dancing with you and getting intoxicated by the Chapel's wonderful dance music! Mads Hansens Chapel will take the stage at 8:00 PM and let the big ball begin.
\nBEFORE: We will hold a short workshop from 5:30 PM to 6:15 PM where we will dance our way through the steps of the various dances that we will perform at tonight's ball.
