Enthusiasts and zealots \u2013 together with other users of folk music \u2013 hold the flag high, and institutions such as T\u00f8nder Festival, Strib Vinterfestival, Skagen Festival, Godtfolk Festival, Himmerlands Folk Music School, Folk Music Education at the Conservatory in Esbjerg, and the record company Go Danish Folk Music, are alive and flourishing, and the music is played all over the country. The past year was full of exciting folk music initiatives and events, from S\u00f8nderhobal in Christiania, to Balladeseminar at Broby Skole, to the new Aarhus Folk Festival. Here is a list of 10 Danish roots and folk music events that might be worth looking forward to in 2017!<br \/>\n<em>By Morten Alfred H\u00f8irup<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Folk Spot Denmark \u2013 showcase concerts at T\u00f8nder Festival (August 25 &amp; 26, 2017)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Friday 25th and Saturday 26th August 2017<\/em> Eight Danish bands are playing at T\u00f8nder Festival, for thousands of festival-happy folk music enthusiasts and international industry professionals, under the heading \u201cFolk Spot Denmark 2017\u201d. The foreign guests come partly to experience T\u00f8nder Festival&#039;s many exciting international names, but not least to see what Danish folk music has to offer these years. Folk Spot Denmark 2017 is organized by ROSA in collaboration with T\u00f8nder Festival, and the participating bands, all of whom have international ambitions, are carefully selected from 40-50 applicants. (27 June \u2013 2 July 2017)<\/strong><br \/>\nRETHINK Folk Music Festival is taking place in the coming days <em>June 27 to July 2, 2017<\/em>, and is the crowning achievement of the RETHINK Folk Music project, which has been building up to the great cultural year since 2014. The festival takes place in the scenic area of Sletten and Himmelbjerget in Skanderborg Municipality. For a week, the area will be inhabited by 4-500 young folk music enthusiasts, all of whom will participate in an extensive workshop program, which will be instructed by the absolute best folk musicians from top-notch and award-winning orchestras in Denmark. In addition, the re-thinking aspect will also manifest itself in extra musical experiences beyond hearing, with a focus on reflection and social learning. (May 16, 2017) <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 5:00 PM \u2013 6:15 PM<\/em> invites the Danish National Fiddlers to a gala concert with an award ceremony at the old Hofteateret at Christiansborg Riding Hall, and a subsequent folk music festival at Vartov, near Copenhagen City Hall. The evening&#039;s overall theme is &quot;What is tradition, and what is Danish? What is our identity from a musical point of view?&quot;. Everyone is of course welcome to the concert and the party afterwards. Minister of Culture Mette Bock (LA), has announced her arrival and has promised to give a speech, and among the other invitees we find a number of politicians and industry professionals, as well as the press. (16 &amp; 17 June 2017)<\/strong><br \/>\nIt undeniably sounds like a great idea to combine folk music and quality organic food, and that&#039;s exactly what they&#039;re doing in Kongens Have in Copenhagen these days. <em>June 16 and 17, 2017<\/em>. The food is provided by K\u00f8dbyens Mad og Marked, under the heading \u201cHigh-quality comfort food in the grass\u201d, and the music, which will appeal to a broad folk-oriented audience of all ages, will be played on 2 stages by 18 Danish and foreign folk bands \u2013 traditional as well as more mainstream oriented. Among them we see Kris Kristoffersen (US), Folkeklubben (DK), Floggy Molly (US), The Steel Wheels (US), Passenger\u201d (UK), Lisa Ehdahl (S), Jacob Dinesen (DK) and Dave Kings Band (IR). (January 1, 2017)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>From 1 January 2017, folk music once again came under a new genre organisation. In 2016, the Danish Arts Foundation&#039;s project support committee for music decided to merge World Music Denmark and the folk music area into a new genre organisation, which has been named Tempi. The new board consists of people from both the world music environment and the folk music environment, and they are currently getting a handle on a strategy and a budget. Once approved, a framework agreement will be drawn up and signed. (November 25, 2017)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The <em>November 25, 2017 <\/em>The 15th edition of the annual DMA Folk awards ceremony will take place. It will be held in Stakladen in Aarhus in connection with Aarhus European City of Culture 2017, and on stage will be Carsten Knudsen, known from De Nattergale, as emcee. The first Danish Music Award Folk concert and awards ceremony was held in T\u00f8nder in 2001, and in the following years it became almost a tradition to go to T\u00f8nder to celebrate folk music in its many forms. In 2011, the awards ceremony was held for the first time at Avenue-T in Frederiksberg in Copenhagen, for various reasons, in connection with the large European world expo Womex. (August 10th \u2013 13th, 2017)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Perhaps Denmark&#039;s most progressive folk music festival turns 9 years old today. <em>August 10th \u2013 13th, 2017.<\/em> The festival, which takes place in the backyard of organizers Anne Grete Kamille and S\u00f8ren Korsh\u00f8j, attracts around 1,000 musicians and audiences to the small town of Nr. Smidstrup not far from Tappern\u00f8je every year. There is room for everyone here, children and young people, adults and old, folk musicians and beginners, fire breathers, Vikings, scouts, ballad singers, dancers and storytellers. You camp in tents or bring your own caravans, there are food stalls and record sales, go-karting and spinning, sandpits, homemade climbing frames, kissing benches, campfire sites, sheds, knitting corner, dance tree and much, much more. (July 12 &amp; 13, 2017 2017)<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring the month of July, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival fills large parts of the capital with jazz of many different types. It&#039;s just lovely, but if you still feel like a little jazz break during the festival, then maybe it&#039;s time to visit SommerFolk at Balders Plads. Here it&#039;s bubbling with roots, folk and folk music during the days <em>July 12th and 13th.<\/em> At the square, ROSA, in collaboration with R\u00f8de Roses Kaffebar, is arranging a couple of intensive days of roots, folk and folk music. (April 8-14, 2017)<\/strong><br \/>\nROD is an annual folk music competition for all young people between the ages of 15 and 25. The next competition will take place at T\u00f8nder Gymnasium in <em>Easter holidays from April 8 to 14, 2017<\/em>. It costs around 1,200 DKK to join. At ROD it is not important whether you are a beginner or already skilled on your instrument, nor is it necessary that you already know folk music. The crucial thing is that you want to join, and want to play and have fun with other young people. The course culminates with a big public concert on April 13, where everyone performs something they have learned during the week. You should keep an eye on ROD&#039;s website, because this is also where you can register for the event at some point, and it usually sells out very quickly! This year the first 170 tickets will go on sale on February 1 at 5 p.m., so we&#039;ll say it again: you should keep an eye on ROD&#039;s website! May 2017)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>folkBALTICA takes place on both sides of the Danish-German border, and yes, it <em>is <\/em>a German festival with headquarters in Flensburg, but the program is put together by the Danish violinist Harald Huagaard, and there is plenty of Danish music on the program, along with everything else exciting they have to offer. folkBALTICA presents a long series of concerts this year with the theme \u201cThe Great Journey\u201d. This includes the pride of the festival, the folkBALTICA Ensemble, with young people from both sides of the border. In addition, you can experience more established names such as Jansberg &amp; Terra Nova (DK), Fru Skagerrak (S\/N\/DK), Martin Simpson (UK), Dwight Lamb with Jensen &amp; Bugge + H\u00f8irup (USA\/DK), Kimberley Fraser &amp; Aaron Lewis (CAN), Timo Alakotila (SF), Basco with Jullie Hjetland (DK\/N\/S), Rasmus Lyberth (GRL\/DK\/GHA), The Original Danish Polcalypso Orchestra (DK), and many, many more. folkBALTICA runs in the period <em>May 13 \u2013 21, 2017<\/em>.
