This podcast is part of a series titled Capital Gold – Folk music in Denmark, which is about documenting and disseminating the capital's folk music and the scene it is a part of, and it is produced by RadioFolk.dk before Media Garden, and is supported by Ministry of Culture. Thank you for that!

It is the end of April and we have gathered at Ellemarkskolen in Køge to record the Hunting Society play for dance, with an included break with coffee and cake. The ballet is arranged by Køge Fiddlers' Association which was founded in 1980, and the people from the fiddlers' association will probably be happy, but also slightly surprised, to see us, because we forgot to tell them we were coming. Oops!

The Jagdselskabet is built around the 76-year-old violinist, Steen Jagd Andersen, from Valby, and their repertoire consists of a mixture of traditional dance music – not least music from the West Jutland two-string fiddler, Thomas Thomsen, who Steen learned from and played with when he was young – and then new music inspired by the Danish fiddler tradition, new music that Steen has composed over the years.

In addition to his collaboration with Thomas Thomsen, some will know Steen from his many years of interaction with the fiddler Jorgen Jeppesen, also called Left-Handed Jørgen – the two had the band Dansk Arbejde, among others, together with Smeden from Dragør, Carsten Holm, who was known for playing the meanest double bass in Copenhagen and the surrounding area.

In the Hunting Society, Steen Jagd plays together with the royal fiddler, violinist Kristian Bugge and with a pianist Malene Daniels Beck. In 2022, they released the album together. The Hunting Company, which contains 17 melodies that Steen has composed on “the shoulders of Danish folk music and dance tradition“", as he himself puts it.

Welcome to a podcast about the Danish folk musician and composer, violinist Steen Jagd and his trio Jagtselskabet.
