Thank you for that!

One afternoon in February I visited George Mihalache in his and his wife Susanne's cozy apartment on Amager, to talk to him about his life with music. George is a gypsy and was born in Bucharest in 1971. He doesn't just play the cymbalom, he actually also plays both the double bass and the xylophone, but his main instrument is and will remain the Cymbalom – or the chopping board as he calls it.

Cimbalom is the Hungarian name for a trapezoidal box equipped with 4 legs and a lot of metal strings that are struck with two light wooden hammers with felt heads. With an accompanying pedal, you can dampen the strings while playing, and thus vary the sound.

George Mihalache's father, Andrei Mihalache, was a very well-known and well-liked accordion player and singer in Romania during the communist regime, and George himself has worked – and continues to work – in Denmark with many different musicians and in many different contexts. He is known for his collaboration with the now deceased guitarist Christian Sievert, for his work with accordion players Lelo Nika, and as leader of the Calibut Band. For some years he also played in a trio with the Danish national fiddler and violinist, Hans Jorgen Christensen, and the also Danish physicist and musician, Peter Bastian on clarinet, oboe and bassoon.

Welcome to a podcast about the award-winning Romanian cimbalom player and composer, George Mihalache, who has lived and worked in Denmark since 1994.
