This podcast is part of a series titled Ø-Gold – Folk music in Denmark which is about documenting and disseminating the islands' folk music and the scene it is a part of.

The music we hear during the podcast is played by De Dysted Spillefolk on one of their regular Tuesday rehearsal nights in The Folk Music House in Fensmark. The orchestra was started in 1975 by the Copenhagen musician and music educator, Fine Alfred Larsen, not long after he had moved to Dysted Old School, about 8 kilometers from Naestved. After a while he missed the music, so he put an ad in the local newspaper looking for someone to play with. The rest is folk music history, and this podcast is produced by RadioFolk.dk before Media Garden, and is supported by The Islands Art Foundation. Thank you for that!

Fin Alfred has been leading De Dysted Spillefolk for 13 years, based on the principle that everyone can join, you can come when you have time, and it should be fun to play. This line has been continued by changing orchestra leaders since then, and in 2025 the orchestra consists of around 38 musicians who go out and play at nursing homes and community centers more than 20 times a year.

De Dysted Spillefolk is a distinctly self-propelled orchestra, almost anarchistic in a good way. Only after having existed for over 40 years did it become necessary for them to form a specific association in 2019, otherwise they would have made the decisions over a cup of coffee. Together with the other users, they have looked after the old community centre, which they were given the right to use by the municipality at the time – on condition that they themselves maintain the house and also help fill it with activities – and the reason why they started the De Dysted Spillefolk association in the first place is that they were told at the bank that if the orchestra is not an association, the orchestra cannot have a bank account. And it is difficult to manage without one these days.

In the folk music house run by the umbrella association Storstrøm Folk Tone Nowadays you can find folk dancers, amateur theater, a youth school, a bridge club, a folk café and lots of musicians.

I visit De Dysted Spillefolk in Fensmark Folkemusikhus on a rehearsal evening in December – the orchestra always rehearses on Tuesdays – and there I talk to the violinist Marianne Hansen who has been what she calls the 'prelude' for the orchestra since 2015. But already in March 2025, violinist and Elderman spoke Palle Fritz Nielsen, and regular member of the orchestra since the dawn of time, accordion player and double bassist, Henrik Petersen, in connection with the orchestra's 50th anniversary celebration.

Organization: Morten Alfred Hoirup.

Find out more at www.dystedspil.dk

Welcome to a podcast about the South Zealand fiddlers' guild, De Dysted Spillefolk, which could celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2025.
