The podcast is part of a series titled Ø-Gold – Folk music in Denmark which is about documenting and disseminating the islands' folk music and the scene it is a part of.

The music we hear in the podcast is played by MC Hansen and his band, and the podcast is produced by RadioFolk.dk before Media Garden, and is supported by The Islands Art Foundation. Thank you for that!

One morning in June I got off the train at Lundby Station in South Zealand, not far from Presto. The agreement was that I would be picked up by MC – or Mads Christian, as I think his real name is – who had promised to take me on a little road trip and show me a handful of places in his home region that have inspired him to write some of the songs that he daily takes out and plays for people all over the country.

One of the songs is about Balle-Lars who was born in 1822 to poor parents in Stensby, a small village between Vordingborg and Møn. Balle-Lars was actually named Lars Nielsen, but was called Balle-Lars after his mother Balle-Johanne, who in turn was named after the village of Balle, where she was born.

As a poor servant, Balle Lars worked in many different places, but he often moved on after only six months in the job. During periods when he had no work, he walked the country road with other unemployed people, and when you don't have any money, you can sometimes have to steal.

In 1845, Balle-Lars stole a pair of braces, for which he received 30 days of bread and water. Shortly after he was released, he stole 5 boards to make a door for the cabin he lived in with his wife. It cost him 1 year of bread and water, and then things really went downhill for Balle-Lars.

In the years that followed, he became an almost professional lawbreaker and arsonist. He set a couple of fires in 1856 and 1858. The farmers paid him well for it so they could commit insurance fraud, and on October 16, 1860, Balle-Lars was beheaded for the shooting death of Ane Marie Hemmingsdatter, a contract killing that he was paid 100 rigsdaler to arrange for a farm owner who wanted to get hold of Anne Marie's farm.

Organized and edited by Morten Alfred Hoirup.

Here is a podcast about the award-winning South Zealand guitarist, songwriter and storyteller MC Hansen.
